We dined during Restaurant Week, expecting an exceptional experience given its Michelin Guide listing and positive reviews. Sadly, our visit was a disappointment.
Service:
The initial reception was poor. The young waitress at the entrance was dismissive and unwilling to speak English with us, which felt unwelcoming in an international city like Amsterdam. Instead of guiding us to our seats, she simply gestured downstairs and told us to pick any table for two. Fortunately, the waitress who served us later was more professional.
Food:
We had high expectations, but the flavors were bland, and some dishes unpleasant. When the waitress checked on us, we were honest and let her know we weren’t enjoying the food. We wondered if perhaps it was an off night for the chef, as many courses simply didn’t meet the standards of fine dining. For example the artichoke soup with eel tasted unpleasantly like salty tap water, and the half-scallop with mushrooms was burnt.
Only the main courses—seabass and ribeye—were genuinely enjoyable, offering a glimpse of the quality we’d anticipated.
In summary, De Compagnon was expensive and disappointing, with inconsistent food and a surprising lack of hospitality at the start. I wonder if it's because we booked during the Restaurant Week. We may consider a return visit in the future, hoping that this was just an unfortunate off night, but for now, we’d hesitate to recommend it to others.
